How To Make More Money

One question I get quite frequently from my clients is How To Make More Money.  Most people think one way.  You need a job, you get a salary and the only way to make more money is to get promoted or get a raise.

This is how we are all raised, or most of us at least.  My father was the vice president of a large company, and I saw the life he lead.  This is how I thought life was supposed to be.  It can be another way.

First question I ask is are you making money doing what you love or what you’re truly passionate about?

The answer, 9 times out of 10, is usually no.

* Three powerful thought exercises that will lead to greater success in finances, relationships, and family.

Most people get an education, get a job somewhat related to their education, and then migrate through a company or several companies over the course of the next several or more years in search of a job that they love.  Sure, they may get good at the job that they do, but do they truly love it?  Or are they conditioned to believe that this is their best shot at life and they might as well conform.

And the longer they do it, the longer they stay in this one position, in this same industry, the more they become married to it.  In fact, many people have careers that last longer than their marriages.  But that’s another story for another time.

When people forgo doing what they love to do what makes them money, there will always be an empty hole in their life.

So generally, my response to anyone that asks me how to make more money is not to go get a degree or try to get a raise or try to get a promotion.  It’s simply, do what you love.

Now that doesn’t mean to quit your job today, and start doing what you love tomorrow.  It means to find ways to get yourself more involved on the side doing what you love.  And tell yourself that you are going to be successful at it and find ways to make money doing what you love.

Now this is what is called an intention.  Not to get too deep on the metaphysical side of things, but you must state a clear intention of what you want, and how you define success.  And you need to repeat this to yourself every day.

Again, on the metaphysical side, this intention is set out into the universe and it will come back to you.  How it also works is that it goes into your subconscious.  Now I believe the subconscious is one of the most underutilized tools available to all mankind.

I like to explain thee conscious and the subconscious as an iceberg.  Where the conscious only represents the 10% that sits outside the water, and the remaining 90% is the subconscious, sitting below the water.  In fact, the relationship maybe closer to 1% and 99%, but we’ll discuss that later.

Point is, your subconscious is always humming away.  While you’re awake, and while you’re asleep.  When you’re conscious, you can perceive part of your subconscious, but only a small part.  I like to call this the point where the conscious and subconscious meet.  And we have the RAS, or reticular activation system that can facilitate transfer of information from the subconscious to the conscious.

Ok, now back to the reason we state out intentions.  When you do so, you’re telling yourself this is what you want, and your subconscious now goes to work 24/7 to get you what you desire.    And for this reason, you have to learn to become very in tune with the signals you’re getting from your RAS.  And act.

The law of attraction states that what you focus on grows.  And notice that the word action is in the work attraction.  I do believe that you can’t just wish things to happen and have them come true.  You must also take action to facilitate the receipt of what you want.

If this is a little too much to take in, don’t worry.  Come back and I’ll go through some of these concepts in more detail.  When I first started studying many of them myself, I used them to be very successful in every aspect of my life.

But be forewarned.  The subconscious can also be a very powerful negative influence in your life.  When you plant negative thoughts in your subconscious, they grow.  And just like when you plant a seed, you don’t just expect to receive one vegetable, but many.  Same thing with thoughts you plant in your subconscious – they multiply.  So learn how to identify your negative thoughts and rid them from your thought process.  And that’s the key to make more money now.

How To Get The Job You Want

Most people don’t realize when they go on an interview, that they’re sabotaging themselves.  Here are several tips to consider to help you get the job you want.

You Are A Product And An Interview Is Your Commercial

Interviewing is more like marketing than anything else.  You are marketing yourself as a product and you want the interviewer and potential employer to be the buyer. When you sell a product, you want to leave the potential buyer with a top 3 list of why they should buy your product.  Help them make the decision. Or even better, make the decision for them.

To do this, make a list of all the things you bring to the table.  These are your attributes.  Rank them from your own perspective.  But where most people fail in an interview, is that they don’t rank them from the customer or employer’s perspective.  It doesn’t matter what you think your best attributes are, what matters is what they need.  Position yourself to meet their need and you will get the job.

There are a couple things to consider.

The person hiring you is often not the person making the final decision.  So your job as the interviewee is to give them your top 3 attributes or selling points (which are basically theirs) so that the interviewer can repeat them to their boss who usually makes the final decision.  Bring all your answers and focus your interview on these 3 things.  So much so that when they leave the interview, they can repeat them to their manager.

Analyze your competition.  The most common reason for not getting a job are “we hired from within”.  But think about it.  Normally a company will not look outside if they have a capable internal candidate.  In fact, the search outside is usually initiated AFTER they’ve exhausted internal searches.

Here’s how you should analyze the competition.  Create a pro and con list of hiring you versus hiring your competition.  Now I know you don’t know who you’re interviewing against.  Think in general terms.  I.e. you versus an internal candidate, you versus other external candidates, and you versus the ‘dream’ candidate.  You’ll be surprised to find that there are areas of confluence among the three.  You now have your list.

Know The Difference Between Want And Need

Interview from a place of want.  If you interview from a position of need, say you’re unemployed, and you really need a job, any job, then this will come through as a negative.  When you’re interviewing from a place of want, ie. it’s a job you really want, then your mindset will be different.  Just be careful as coming across as needy will remove you from the candidate list.  Those who already have a job interview better because they’re already in a place of want.  They don’t need the job, they already have a job.

Watch out for self sabotage.

A friend of mine “Bob” was going for a position that was a client facing position.  However, when the interviewer asked Bob where he saw themselves in 5 years, Bob said he saw themselves supporting internal employees in a similar function.  This one comment labeled Bob not only as a bad candidate for this position, but for all future positions in a similar role.

But self sabotage goes deeper.  Some people enjoy misery.  They enjoy the attention they get when they go through difficult times.  They enjoy blaming others for their own situation.  They fail to listen when people offer or are willing to offer sound advice or help.  The cure for this level of self sabotage is much more complex.

These people are in a pattern of extreme self sabotage.  Unlike Bob’s situation above, where he merely made the mistake of not preparing well for the interview, these people do it subconsciously on purpose. Their pattern of negativity is so embedded within their psyche, that they don’t even know they’re doing it.

Does it sound like someone you know?  Someone you know personally…

The cure is simply breaking the pattern.  What their doing isn’t working, yet they don’t see it.  They’ve established patterns of failure in their lives.  The cure is to study success.  The cure is to understand that all things originate from thought, and everything you think can be working against you.

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life.

There is no way that I can get you to understand the implications of this in one article.  I’ve put this site together to help you see that there can be another way.  But the #1 key to everything is – be happy now.  Shun negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.  Be grateful for all the good you have.   This will put you in a better position to receive.  Receive what?  All the good that this universe has to offer you.  And that includes the job that is just right for you.

These 7 tips will help you kick start your path to personal growth and achievement.  It’s not an end result though, it’s a continuous process.  Periodically come back and review where you were and where you are now.  You must have an end result in mind.  But during the path there you can become lost.  So make it a point to continuously evaluate your progress on the way to your end result.

Keep A Journal

A journal helps you in two ways.  Your memory isn’t perfect.  If you learn something significant one day, write it down.  You’ll find yourself going back to it and building on it over time. Think about it, if you had a good thought several years ago and went back today to readdress it, you’d be looking at it with new wisdom.

All of history’s greats were avid writers.   Your daily journal will aid you to organize your thoughts.  It will also improve your sense of self.  And it will remind you of your past.  For those who forget their past are likely to repeat it.  Do you know anyone like that?  Anyone like you?

Learn To Meditate

I once saw a t-shirt that read, “Meditation, It’s Not What You Think”.   And that’s exactly it.  If you think about the conscious and the subconscious, there’s a point where they meet.  And that’s where you meditate from.  Remember, your conscious and subconscious are like an iceberg, where your conscious is the 10% that sits above the water, and your subconscious is the 90% that sits below the water.  Your subconscious is so much larger than your conscious and it controls us more than you know.

Think about it.  If you sleep 8 hours a day, your subconscious has total control of your body over this period.  And during the day, it’s humming away, running us, moving thoughts in and out of our head to consider.  We control what thoughts we let in.  Meditating is a way of clearing and cleansing your thoughts.

Meditation is an effective way of eliminating stress and clearing out your mind from the cluttering thoughts that lead to things that can harm you, like worry and anxiety. I suggest doing it daily.  It can helps to slow your heart rate and even regulate your digestion among several other health benefits.

It also makes your sleep more restful and helps your body to recover faster. Basically, the practice of meditation is the one thing which can make the other six of these self improvement tips effective.

Expect & Envision Success

I’m a true believer in what you think about, grows.  And how you think defines who you are.  Great achievers are not any more intelligent than you or I.  What they have in common is that the expect to win.  Even before they know how they’re going to do it.  They envision their future success. Remember what I said about the subconscious?  Well, it can’t tell the difference between the real world and a world that you envision.

This is a state of mind that you need to put yourself in.  Everything exists in thought before it exists physically in this world.  If you want to be successful, imagine yourself already having what you want.  Put yourself in that place.  I call it dream building.  Your subconscious mind solves problems while you’re going about your day (and even more so as you sleep).  By imagining these things, your mind will go about the solution to bring them to you.

Record Your Goals and Action Plans

This is called setting your intentions.  It’s your way of letting your subconscious know that this is something you want your focus on.  And what you focus on grows.  Every self improvement guru will recommend this.  I also like to begin with the end in mind.  Sometimes you can get so focused on the many steps it will take to get somewhere, like a to do list – that you lose site of the end result – the goal – and where you want to be.

Make it a habit.  Review it daily, weekly or monthly depending on what it is.  Don’t just set it and forget it, this isn’t New Years!   Writing down clear and specific goals and plans of action for achieving those goals.  This sets expectations in your subconscious.

Be Well Rounded

If you focus too much of your energy in one area of your life, other areas of your life will falter.   Focus on work, your family life will suffer.  This process of self improvement needs to be holistic.  Every aspect of your life affects every other aspect of your life.

This also helps you in identifying what you need to improve the most.  If your relationships are bad, then they’ll affect your health and your finances.   Anyone who has ever gone through a divorce knows this best.  The level of uncertainty, one of the 6 basic human needs, is so high, that it disrupts everything in your life.

Improve your relationships, and you’ll find that other areas of your life will improve.

If your health is poor it will stunt your personal growth and you will have no energy to achieve any of your goals.

So regardless of what you’re trying to accomplish, being well-rounded is the key factor to experiencing a balanced life and for developing the physical stamina, the emotional fortitude, the financial security and the social support system required in order to achieve what you desire.

Positive Affirmations

First, let me define what an affirmation is.  It’s simply a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.   They have the power to impact your subconscious and literally change yourself down to the core.  You should have at least one positive affirmation for each of your key areas of life (health, relationships, finances and career) and rehearsing them out loud at least twice daily.

I like to place post its of affirmation on to my mirror in the bathroom.  Look at it every morning when I wake up, and every night before I go to bed.

We all come with an inner programming based on how we were raised, who we were exposed to and our environment growing up.  This can create bad programming.  The only way to get over it is to reprogram your brain.  That way, when your subconscious is operating, and you’ve programmed it to believe “I make healthy choices when eating” then you’re more likely to make healthy choices.

Teach What You Learn

I truly believe that the learning process is established after you learn, when you apply and then, and more importantly, when you teach.

If you teach people the principles you learn here, you will develop a clear understanding.  In addition, you will be able to apply them more effectively in our life.  Sign up at a local Adult Ed program to teach self improvement.  It is an awesome way to get to meet people of a similar mindset.  And you never know, you may just find it’s your passion.

Here’s something to try.  Write about each of these simple self improvement tips from your perspective and then as if you were teaching these principles to someone else.  It will deepen your understanding.
